What Is Photo CD?
From 04/93 The Talking PC, Ark/OK PC Users Group
The Quality of Film With the Convenience of Electronics
In the world of color imaging, film has consistently set the standard for high-
quality, lowcost image capture. In the digital world, you can manipulate, store,
and use your images quickly and easily. But there's never been an easy,
affordable way to have the best of both worlds -- the quality of film and the
convenience of electronics -- at an affordable cost. Until now. The KODAK
Photo CD system delivers the enduring advantages of film with the speed and
flexibility of digital technology.
Ease: The Photo CD process starts with your own camera. Bring any roll of 35mm
film to an authorized photoprocessor and ask for a Photo CD disc in addition to
your normal processing. (You can also have your existing 35mm negatives or
slides transferred to disc.) Bring your disc back and continue adding pictures
-- up to 100 per disc.
Cost: For a surprisingly affordable price, you receive standard film
processing, your negatives, prints, and your Photo CD disc. Actual prices are
determined by the photoprocessor, not by Kodak.
Quality: Virtually all the visual information in each original photograph is
captured in an 18 megabyte file, which is compressed to about 4.5 megabytes
for storage on the disc. Each picture is stored in one file at five different
resolutions (128 x 192, 256 x 384, 512 x 768, 1024 x 1536, and 2048 x 3072), so
you can use the resolution that best fits your need.
Flexibility: Enjoy your pictures on your own TV with Photo CD players from
Kodak. (Coming soon: add sound and graphics to create "talking photo albums".)
Or use Photo CD images in computer applications as easily as you would any
other digital image files. The KODAK Photo CD system sets the standard for
desktop imaging in the '90s.
From Disc to Computer...
To access Photo CD images on the desktop, you will need a CD-ROM XA drive with
multisession capability, appropriate driver and host adaptor software, and
KODAK Photo CD Access Software or any other software application that is
Photo CD-enabled. With the five resolutions available per image you can use
Photo CD images in applications ranging from image archives and databases, to
video, multimedia, desktop publishing, HDTV viewing, and high quality printing.
KODAK Photo CD products put the power of your images to work for you.
